Gyeongju was the capital during the kingdom of Silla, which lasted more than 1000 years. It is therefore a city rich in history with wel-preserved monuments.
263/5000The main attraction of Gyeongju is its collection of royal dynasty tombs, buried under hills. There are more than 35 royal tombs in the city. Some tombs are open to visitors and display relics from the Silla period.
The city museum also presents very beautiful pieces from this period and has the advantage of being free of charge.
The city is moreover known for the Cheomseongdae observatory, the oldest observatory in Asia built in 634.
By going a little further away from the center of the city by bus, it is possible to visit two monuments classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. If the Seokguram cave, with its big Buddha, did not particularly impressed us, we really appreciated the Bulguksa temple, classified as the 1st historic and scenic site by the South Korean government.
